A walk around the Gardens anyone?

Learning is fun! Really, you ask?  In Year 5 we work hard so fun is definitely part of our lessons too. This morning we took our learning outside the classroom and applied our Geography knowledge to the settlement around us.

We were investigating land use, whether it was used for transport, housing, public buildings, industrial use, commercial, and so on. Our very own Oasis Gardens compound offered us the chance to investigate these different land uses, and to plot them on a map.

Where do the ice lollies fit in, you may ask? Well, the compound shop does provide a service, so in the spirit of supporting the commercial use of land, Ms Kinghorn decided to treat us all to a lolly each.

Poetry in Motion

I’m not a kid, ok

I’m not a kid, I say

I’m not a kid.

These words could be heard in the Yr 5 classrooms this week.  Why?
Poetry has been our unit of study in Literacy.  We have read the poems of Michael Rosen and Valerie Bloom and considered their styles of writing.

Watch Michael Rosen perform his poem

Year 5s, we now look forward to reading your own free verse poems.

REVOLTILICIOUS ROALD DAHL DAY!

After studying a unit on a signicant children's author, 2nd October saw the Year 5 classes dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters. The adults got in on the act as well.

Do you recognise these characters?

Parents were invited to join a Literacy lesson where stories in the style of Roald Dahl were being written. Some parents may have felt as if they had gone back in time as the  lessons were taught by witches.
The Wicked Witch?

The Good Witch?

The Kind Witch?

The main task was to proof read and edit the story and then complete it with the help of the parent.  Both parents and pupils found this to be an enjoyable and useful activity.

The highlight of the day was the eating.....eating the revolting dishes that Year 5 created.

Please be reassured that no child was harmed in the taste testing! There were a few grimaces but most of the dishes turned out to be quite delicious, even the Mayo and Ketchup Chilli cake.

Upcoming Event: Roald Dahl Day - 2nd October 2012

Come join in the fun and help us celebrate the work of Roald Dahl.
We will be dressing up as our favourite characters, so make sure you do too.

Think you know all there is to know about Roald Dahl? Think again! Have a look at some of these fantastic facts about Roald Dahl and you just might be surprised by some of the information:

  1. Most people think that Roald Dahl’s first children’s book was James and the Giant Peach, but it wasn’t. The Gremlins, published in 1943, was his first book for kids.
  2. Roald Dahl received a letter in 1971 from a real-life Willy Wonka. This Willy Wonka didn’t own a chocolate factory. He lived in Nebraska and worked as a postman.
  3. Most people know that Roald Dahl wrote books for both children and adults, but did you know that he also wrote screenplays? Dahl penned the screenplays to the James Bond film You Only Live Twice and the children’s film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
  4. Roald Dahl was fluent in three languages: English, Norwegian and Swahili. He learnt to speak Swahili when he was working in Africa for Shell in the 1930s.
  5. Roald Dahl was a giant of a man. At 6’5” (about 198cm) Roald Dahl would have towered over most of his readers and fans.
  6. Dahl loved eating chocolate, though he didn’t much care for chocolate ice cream or chocolate cake. It is said that when he was a young man, Roald Dahl’s hair was the colour of milk chocolate.

You can also part of our day by staying tuned to our blog and commenting on the activities that will take place next Tuesday.

The Piano

During the course of the past two weeks, Year 5 have been studying The Piano by Aidan Gibbons, a moving piece about an old man reminiscing about his life. 5S have taken one scene from this, and written a narrative based on the film itself. Here are some samples of their work below.

George ran for his life in the middle of the battlefield to where his brother William was waiting.George was a medic,William was an ordiary soldier.George could hear bullets wizzing overhead, explosions all around.William could feel the pressure of the battle around him, dust in his eyes rubble everywhere.George could taste the dirt on his tongue.William could smell the smoke and rotting corpses. All around was chaos. They were hiding, hearts thumping behind the shattered impenetrable warbase."Should I go?"William shouted."Go on I'll cover you!"replied George."Ok!"shouted William, and as he said so he leaped from the safety of the wall and into the range of fire before George was ready.BANG!BANG!William was shot!"Noooo!William!"cried George as he craddled William."My only wish was for Britian to win the war.Can you make that happen brother?"whispered William with his last breath and died.George looked up into the heavens and felt guilty about William's death.

As John the medic was heading out to help his best friend Ted in the middle of the battle field, all he could hear were bombs dropping, people dying, aeroplane’s flying and worst of all friends saying their last words, he was thinking what a nightmare all my friends dying, the clinic will be full of people I love! John could hear Ted calling for help, so John ran over to his best friend as fast as he could. As he was running he could smell gas and could see a crashed German plane, John could tell it was German because of the marks on it. John finally reached to where Ted was standing, he was hiding behind half a wall and it was close to being no wall. John shouted to Ted even though he was standing right next to him and yelled “You go in for attack and I’ll cover you!” Ted nodded his head and went in for attack! As Ted moved away from the wall’s protection “BANG!” he was shot down dead. John felt terrible about his best friend’s death and more importantly guilty! John dragged Ted somewhere safe and cradled him until he passed away, once Ted had passed away John screamed “I’m so sorry Ted, please pleasssse come back to me!” But by then it was too late Ted had already gone!

John was sitting down on the black dusty chair playing his piano and remembering the rock hard helmet on his head and the heavy armour weighing down his body.He could hear gun shots and bombs dropping over head. The smell of burning buildings and smoke was horrible. He ran down to a bombed wall were a close friend called Bob was, both their hearts pounding like a steel drum which wouldn't stop. They both looked at each other and Bob asked ''Should I shoot ?'' John nodded and whispered ''Yes I will cover you''. Bob took a deep breath and BANG !! Bob fell to the ground John ran down to Bob ran down to him and heled him in is arms he was full of guilt

As John remembered his beloved brother Joe, his memories draged him back to the disgracful time, when John and Joe had been hidding behind a piece of the building that had just been bombed by the murderous enemies. John remembered how his heart was pounding, it was as if his heart was going to jump out of his chest, while John was looking back at that violent memory, his heart was pounding the same way it did during that war, he couldn't resisit it, his fingers moved faster along the white and black keys. He remembered when he gave Joe am instent nod to fight back to the enemy. BANG! Down drew a tear on Johns depresed face. "Oh joe don't leave me, please!" Cried John with red eyes, "Joh...n, y...ou, still...have..fathe...in...you," wispered Joe tring to catch his breath. "NOOOO!" Shouted john at the top of his voice. John carried on fighting, still thinking how he let Joe end his life! John felt very guilty and still feels guilty today.

The day has come the day that Joe says good bye to George. It started off with World War 2 George was really scared. Around George was a million of dead people shot by enemies friends saying good bye to each other, poor old George was one of the guilty ones. George was far from his very dear friend so he ran toward the broken wall. There they started to speak to each other Joe shouted I will go George.
George cried yes but take care .
Then he nodded, and Joe went to fight he was very close to shot a man but bang! Bang!!!!!
George cried no.
George ran up too Joe and cried Joe please speak to me Joe.
Joe reapplied I can’t any more this is what was written for me and plus you can’t help me George .
No pleas e no, George screamed
Sherouq

there they stood John and Lee. It was dreadful, there was dirt , dust there were sounds of bullets, bombs and grenades every were broken houses but only a wall stood between them and their awful enemies . bullets shot BANG BANG! "Come on lee" yelled john as he went behind the wall " On the count of three i want you to go and shoot" whispered Lee " 1....2....3" shouted Lee then... boom "No" cried Lee. John was shot down to the ground. "its all my fault" Lee wept as he held john in his arms " Lee forgive your..." John replied .those were is last words he couldn't finish the sentence

Jones was looking at the battlefield in his muddy mucky clothes. He couldn’t imagine running towards the shuttered wall. There he could hear the banging of the guns and crashing of helicopters. There his friend Henry was standing to defend himself from the enemies shooting him. He was ready to fire but from all the smoke and gas he could smell, he wondered if it was a good idea. In case of any men hiding in the dirt. ‘Ill warn you when to fire in case of any emergency’. Henry took a deep breath turned around and Jones screamed,’’ Noo Henry.’ But it was too late, the rival clicked on his trigger and it banged on Henrys body. ‘Leave me and save yourself…’ whispered Henry. ‘I’m so sorry,’ Jones cried.

While playing the piano John felt something hard on his head. Then he remembered when he was in the war. He was running to a bombed wall where his friend was hiding. John called to his friend, “wait titan, I'm not ready”. Titan replied, “I'm not going to give up!!” and jumped out. It was hard to walk over the shattered bricks.

BANG!! BANG!!

John saw his dead friend and cried. “don’t leave me, he whispered.
Humza

Bullets were flying over Henry, grenades were exploding ,on were to be seen . Henry and Georges heart was thumping so fast as if it was about to stop. There a broken wall in middle of the battle field and then George shouted out to Henry ‘Should I attack?’
‘yes’as he said in a scared voice
George nodded an then BANG!! George was had shot two people but George didn’t have the power shoot them all and one in Georges chest and then he on the ground flat ‘NO!!!!’ as Henry shouted
Henry cradled in his arms and cried ‘I’m sorry brother ‘
George said no word and went to sleep permanently.

davids fingers trembled as he played the piano. He was imagining himself wearing an army hat and running towards his only friend Harry. They both leaned their backs against the rough wall and by accident David nodded at Harry to tell him to go and shoot but then Harry got shot before he even got to shoot his own enemy, and BOOF!, he plopped to the hard ground. David shouted NO!, what can i do without you? i hope you miss me! His heart beated with a thump thump. Here is the final day i can say good bye to my dear friend Harry. He sniffed and sniffed for i dont know how long. :-)

Ted plays the same note again when a helmet appears on his head, looking guilty looking left he was reminded of another memory. Ted was running to be with his friend bill and help fight in war while running he could hear helicopters crashing people saying there last words, dust was in his eyes the wind was blowing at fast speed, He could feel as he was pulled back but he didn’t stop. There he was behind the broken wall with his friend bill there was bits and pieces of the houses or buildings.
Bill whispered’’ Should I go “
Ted gave a node replied” Ok you can go I am here “
Ted replied” I will go “
Bill replied ” You can go at the count of 1 2 3 ok “
Ted says ” ok“
Bill said ’’ 1 , 2, and 3 “
Bill went to side not blocked by a wall he was about to shoot but got shoot    himself. He fell down on the ground .Ted quickly got Bill and took him behind the wall got him by his shoulders and said” are you ok do not leave me alone in war it is all my fault I should have never node I am sorry “
Bill replied” It is not your fault I will have to leave you know just remember me your heart “ ” Bye tell my family I love them “
Then bill just closed his eyes and died on teds lap ted was guilty.

Jubilee Celebrations

A carnival spirit swept over the whole of BISAK today with celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee. Year 5 certainly embraced the whole spirit of the day, dressing in red, white and blue clothing and making hats to mark the occasion. The day culminated with a 'street party' shared with Year 6 in our enhancement area. Mr. David Harries from the British Trade Office came and oversaw proceedings, and Year 5 were especially proud when 5S' Kirsty Young was awarded runner up for the best hat in the whole of Primary School.
