Pheidippides has run all the way back from Marathon to Athens with news of a great victory. Emma (5S) has given us a recount of the events here.
The battle of Marathon was one of the most
important battles in world history. On a summer's morning in 490BC, two armies
faced each other across the plain of Marathon, 26 miles from Athens. On one
side were 9,000 Athenians, supported by 1,000 men from Plataia. On the other
were between 18,000 and 25,000 Persian warriors (including men from various
parts of the Persian empire).
The Persian army had come to conquer Athens, as a first step to taking over the
whole of Greece, adding it to the already enormous Persian Empire. On the way
to Marathon they had defeated several other Greek cities, killing the men,
enslaving the women and children, and burning down the towns. Marathon is
remembered for the heroism of a Greek named Pheidippides. Before the battle,
he'd run for 2 days and nights - over 150 miles (240 km) - from Athens to Sparta
to fetch help. Then he fought at Marathon. After the battle, he ran 26 miles
(42 km) non-stop to Athens, but died as he gasped out the news of victory. The
modern Marathon race is over the same distance as his epic run from Marathon to
Athens. (Emma 5S)

Multiplication puzzle grids
Try these at home - you can build your grids as small as you like, you can try to practise those tables you're not very confident on, or you can build bigger grids and time yourself - can you get any faster? Can Mum or Dad beat you? Get multiplying!

Sandwich Day
5S had great fun on Wednesday last week making the sandwiches for which they'd previously written the instructions. Parents, no need to make packed lunches for the children anymore, they're all capable of making their own!
Here are our Year 5 students tucking in!
Perhaps our children can post a comment on the blog to say how their sandwich tasted, and how they enjoyed making it.

The Highwayman
Over the last two weeks, year 5 have been studying the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes culminating in the writing of our own additional verses in the style of the poem. Below are some of our efforts.
Tim the Ostler was disappointed when he heard the terrible
news.
The two ghostly lovers,
laughed and chattered
Bess, I should say, was
quite indeed flattered.
Together they rode across
the long, purple moor
Together they stayed with
hearts rich, but never poor
Together they rode – away
– away- away
And the story of the
ghostly lovers is still told today.

But the
stingy soldiers the arrogant soldiers were grandly amused.
He was
looking at the lovely Bess everyday.
Every lonely
night, storming night and dark night.
His fierce
feelings were drowning and drifting away.

Tim shattered when he saw his love lying dead.
Tim got mad with sliders and went to kill them dead.
Up ahead was king Georges
castle.
He got mad mad and mad
with anger.
He talked with anger. With the pistol in the solders hand .
Tim was scared and dazzled .

He watched him gallop off in the
distance, then turned his gaze to the room,
He looked up the casement with
impending sense of doom,
He ran with his power of love,
Running with every tear
drop,drop,drop
He wished he’d go with her
above

When
Tim heard about Bess death he turned his gaze to the room.
He
looked up at the casement with impending sense of doom.
Tim’s
eyes started tiring all the way.
He
blew his first kiss, his second kiss and then his last kiss.
Tim
sadly toke the horses and galloped away.

The soldiers' took the highwayman's
body and threw it off the cliff
All the highwayman's clothes were
ripped and on the water it would drift
Tim the Ostler shouted out with glee
and was happier then ever.
But then one second later, one minute
later, one hour later.....
He found out Bess died he cried and
sniffed then never forgave his self ever.

There Tim the Ostler was outside of
King George’s palace
He told them his word to capture Bess
and drink her ale in a chalice
They heard once more what the Ostler
said
They were carefully listening,
listening, listening
Then they thought about her in their
head.
Andy 5S
Tim the selfish ostler told the fierce Red troop soldiers,
What he had heard
behind the highwayman’s shoulder,
They didn’t trust him but still went all the way,
Thinking the highwayman would come riding,
riding, riding,
Thinking
the highwayman would come riding to take Bess, his love, away.
