Battle of Marathon

Pheidippides has run all the way back from Marathon to Athens with news of a great victory.  Emma (5S) has given us a recount of the events here.

The battle of Marathon was one of the most important battles in world history. On a summer's morning in 490BC, two armies faced each other across the plain of Marathon, 26 miles from Athens. On one side were 9,000 Athenians, supported by 1,000 men from Plataia. On the other were between 18,000 and 25,000 Persian warriors (including men from various parts of the Persian empire).
The Persian army had come to conquer Athens, as a first step to taking over the whole of Greece, adding it to the already enormous Persian Empire. On the way to Marathon they had defeated several other Greek cities, killing the men, enslaving the women and children, and burning down the towns. Marathon is remembered for the heroism of a Greek named Pheidippides. Before the battle, he'd run for 2 days and nights - over 150 miles (240 km) - from Athens to Sparta to fetch help. Then he fought at Marathon. After the battle, he ran 26 miles (42 km) non-stop to Athens, but died as he gasped out the news of victory. The modern Marathon race is over the same distance as his epic run from Marathon to Athens. (Emma 5S)

  2. The battle of marathon was one of the earliest and most important battles. It started in 499BC and ended in 499BC. Greeks lived in nearby countries and some lived in Persia (Iraq and Iran) they were not being treated well by the Persian king Darius the 1so he wanted revenge on Greece so he sent 600 ships to attack. His plan was to attack the main land then Athens. They did exactly that and took the Athenians by surprise. A Greek general named Miltiades knew the Persians tactics he knew he should attack bravely. He sent a messenger called Pheidippides to go too Sparta to ask for help. He set of for 240 km (2 days and 2 nights). When he reached to his surprise the Spartans were having a religious party! They told him that they will help after 68 weeks! He came back again 240 km (2 days and 2 nights) that was 480 km in total. Now he had to fight the Persians and they won themselves lost 129 soldiers and the Persians lost much more. Pheidippides now ran another 42 km non-stop to Athens in Athens he announced that they had won he then collapsed on the floor out of exhaustion. Now the people in the Olympic Games run the same epic run (522 km!)

  5. Pheidippides ran at the speed of 5 km/h (3.125 mph) carrying the word ‘έχουμε κερδίσει!! μας έχουν κερδίσει την Περσική’ (we have won!! We have beaten the Persians!!) to Athens
“Έχουμε κερδίσει!!Έχουμε κερδίσει!!” he cried as he ran through the village. “μας έχουν κερδίσει την Περσική!! μας έχουν κερδίσει την Περσική!!”
When he finished his job he fell to his knees and died of exhaustion and tiredness.
The path Pheidippides ran on is used for the annual marathon race named after The Battle of Marathon.

  6. The Battle of Marathon was a famous Greek victory against the Persians. About 10,000Greeks, mostly from Athens, fought an army of 20,000 Persians which were led by King Darius. The Greeks surprised their enemies by charging downhill straight at the Persians. Philippides ran to Athens to ask for help in the battle. When he arrived the Spartans were celebrating. When he asked them for help they said after the next full moon. So Pheidippides ran back to the battle and fought bravely. When the battle ended the Athenians lost 192 men while the Persians lost more them self. When Pheidippides went to Athens he told Athens the good news and died with glory.

“Rejoice!,”said Pheideppedis with his loudest and joyful voice.

“We have shown them what strenghth we are made of!,”as he was breathing furiously.

“We have shown them no merci,no will try to take over us!,”and then he dropped down dead.

  17. Pheidippides ran to Sparta to ask them for help , but they refused to help until the next full moon! Pheidippides was surprised , he ran back to Athens which was about 150 miles (240 km) . He told the news the Greek General and the Greek General heard that On the Persian army’s way to Marathon they had defeated several other Greek cities, killing the men, enslaving the women and children, and burning down the towns. So we attacked the Persian army . Pheidippides was one of the solders in the War Of Marathon . The two army’s met each other .
The Greek army was surprised when had seen the Persian army, because the Persian army was twice as much as the Greek army. We all prayed and stood in a Phalanx , some of the Greek warriors were on horses they were called Cavalry and some with a bow and arrow called Archers. We started fighting and throwing our spheres high.
The War Of Marathon went on until 431 to 404 BC , the Greeks lost about 149 hoplites ( Greek warriors ) but the Persians lost many, many more than the Greeks . At 404 BC the War Of Marathon ended and the Greece won , the Persians failed in conquering Greece . Pheidippides the great hero sadly died as he gasped out the news of victory.

Before the battle, a young Greek named Pheidippides had to run for two whole days and two whole nights from Athens, all the way to sparta to ask for help. When he arrived, he found out that the Spartans were having a religious festival and dinner, and couldn't come. Poor Pheidippides was very disappointed when he heard that. He then had to run back to Marathon.
When he arrived, he had to fight in the battle, too. Pheidippides was exhausted.
In the end the Greeks defeated the Persians, and they were all celebrating. After the battle, Pheidippides ran non-stop all the way to Athens to announce the great news. As he was telling them all about what happened in the battle, he dropped down dead.
He is still remembered today for his epic, and amazing run. Today, athletes have to cover the same distance that he had to.

  26. THE BATTLE OF THE MARATHON
Once in year 490 BC king of Persia – Darius had thought of begging a war verses Greece, because some of Greeks were just coming to their lands to live and were talking about him that he was a bad king, didn’t care about his country.
In one morning Persians came on Athenian lands starting fighting. The hope came on Sparta’s army. There was a man whose name was Pheidippides. He ran for 2 days and nights - over 150 miles or 240 km - from Athens to Sparta to fetch help. Sparta was always ready. There were problems too. The Persian army was double the size as Sparta’s army and Persia had many thousands of archers when Sparta had none. Long before the hoplites could even reach the Persians with their spears, the sky would be filled with a black cloud of arrows raining death onto their heads. But as you might know Spartans had a big, strong shields. The battle was long and I’ll just skip that part. The short answer for the end – Greeks won!
As you remember I was talking about a guy Pheidippides before, after battle he ran 26 miles or 42 km – back to Athens to tell everyone that they won. His last words were “We won!”, after that in a second he fell and died. Now he is remembered as a hero.

HE WAS REMEMBERED FROM THAT DAY ON.

  29. When the war had finished, Pheidippides ran 26 miles to the city of Athens to tell the Athenians about their victory. When he got to Athens he told them the good news. This is what he might have said: “People of Athens, I have come with great news about our victory against the Persians. I have come from marathon. The war was bloody and it was hard for us but we fought bravely and we have won the battle. Luckily we had help from Plataia. As a total we were 10,000 men, the Persians had a total of between 18,000 and 25,000 men. The Persians conquered to claim Greece but we worked together to fight them for our sacred land. We had lost many men in this battle. I ran and ran for 2 days all the way to Sparta to ask for help, but they had refused to help me and so I ran again, back to Marathon to fight the battle, and luckily I survive to tell the story to you Athenians.” The Athenians might have replied back: “What great news! We are all very proud of your success. We will celebrate!!!”They all cheered. But eventually Pheidippides died about a day after telling the great news.

  31. THE BATTLE OF MARATHON
Before setting off to the Marathon, the Athenians asked help form the Spartans. The Spartans were also allies and their help will be extremely helpful for the Athenians. Sparta was 150 miles away from Athens. They were thinking of the quickest way to get there. The first idea was the ship but it was too slow the next was horses it too hard for them to climb on mountainous rocks. So they thought and thought until the only solution was Pheddipedes the one and only. Pheddipedes was known for running all day long, that was his job, taking messages to other cities. They hired him to go to Sparta to go ask for help. When he got there he asked the elders of Sparta to help fight Persia’s enormous army. They said “No,” not because they were afraid, it was because they were in the middle of celebrating a festival. They had to wait until fullmoon; anyway full moon was six days away. But Pheddipedes said it was tomorrow. So Pheddipedes ran all the way back. By now all the army was camped 26 miles from Athens. The news wasn’t very surprising. The war started and there was no chance of winning Athens thought. Obviously Persia won, but the people who didn’t go were proud of Athens.
The Battle of Marathon was one of the most important of all battle of the world history. The Persia Empire that already is enormous wanted to conquer Athens they both faced each other. At first they took over the whole Greece. On the way to Marathon they defeated several other Greek cities and for no reason, killing the poor people and enslaving the women and children. If you imagine how those brave and bold hoplites must of felt. It must maybe impossible for them to defeat an army twice as big as the size of their own. The Persian had many archer but the Greeks had none. They had spears it was like rain fell and the Greeks were seen with no head.

The first army was Athens with 10,000 soldiers and the other army was Persia with 20,000 soldiers. He died and never knew who got the victory and who got defeated from 431-404 BC.

  44. REGOICE! PHEIDIPPIDDES SHOUTED.

Right after the grand fight between Greeks and Persians they shouted ‘Pheidepiddes!!!!!!!!!!’ As loud as a lion eating its prey. I stood there around all the broken spears dead men blood on people’s shirt. They felt like I was a king to them but I didn’t think I was that much of a king. When I came out of my small kind of shelter I saw a monstrous table flowers and people preparing decorations. I ran to one of the decorators and asked him ‘what’s all this for?!’ he answered back to me ‘Well it’s all for you of course!’ I was stunned of what he said and said ‘this is all a joke’ then the master of Athens came on his horse and announced ‘ ladies gentle men and people of Athens we declare this celebration for a person who saved us from the Persians….PHEIDEPIDDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ‘YYYEEEAAAHHH!!’, screamed everyone. The master ran up to me and gave me a traditional robe to wear for the celebration. On the day of the celebration all the food was set on the gigantic table like the Greek salad and so much more. Right at the time of the celebration everyone cheered for me when I came to the feast. They arranged the master of Athens and I a special seat. The celebration began and the master let us eat. People from village’s towns all came to this feast very excited. We ate all kinds of food for about three hours. After the feast they gave me a 14 pound bag full of silver!!!After the celebration I got a big house and was known as the great Pheidepiddes the great of Greece against Persia.

Only 192 Athenians were killed & 11 Plataians our allies who supplied us with 1’000 hoplites were killed as well. The selfish Spartans refused to participate in the battle because of a stupid festival. Only 7 triremes were captured, but about 6’400 Persians were killed! The reason why we won is simple. We won because of our strength, bravery, better arms & superb battle formation. Long live the Empire of Greece!!”

How I, Pheidippides, Helped the Greeks

In 490 BC, I was commanded by General Militades to run to Sparta to ask them to help Athenians again the cruel Persian attack. I had to run for two nonstop days and nights when I reached Sparta, I found that that the Spartans were having a religious festival and they refused to help until the next full moon! By the time I had to run back to the Marathon with news, I had over a hundred. I also had to fight in the battle. However, being a strong, well-trained Greek, I did this with no trouble.

We, using our usual clever tactics under our commander militates, were able to defeat the huge Persian force, losing only 192 men while the Persians lost many more. I survived the battle in spite of being exhausted after my long run. I was then ordered to take the news of the victory back to Athens. I once again ran all the way, told my good news and then, having done my duty, fell down dead.

If you imagine how those brave and bold hoplites must of felt. It must maybe impossible for them to defeat an army twice as big as the size of their own. The Persian had many archer but the Greeks had none. They had spears it was like rain fell and the Greeks were seen with no head.

I was told that Darius wanted to attack us greeks, they landed at the bay of marathon. Militades decided to best attak the persians rather that wait for them to attack. He sent me to run all the way to Sparta to ask for help, the Spartans were an important state within Greece. The spartans refused to help untill the next full moon! By the time i came back from Sparta and I had to fight in the battle. Us greeks were able to defeat the huge Persian force, losing only 192 men while the Persians lost many more. I survived the battle in spite i was exhausted from my long run. Then i was told to run to Athens and spread the news of victory. When i was on my way back from Athens i fell from exhaustion and died. Now pheidippides is known as a greek hero.

  49. We decide to attack the Greeks. The Greeks rebelled against us; so the Persian ruler Darious wanted revenge. He decide to attack Athens.

I went with a huge army and six ships to attack Greece. We landed at the bay of marathon.
The Athenians were taken by surprise. Unfortunately for us Militades was a clever Greek general and was used to our cunning attacks. He decided to attack us first. The battle began the sun above our heads was scorching hot. We were tightly packed together so the smell of bodies was intolerable. We had no choice but to push on.

The Greeks using their clever tactics under their commander Militades were able to defeat us.
We were a very large force but we lost a lot of our men in the battle. They lost one hundred and ninety two men only and we lost many more.
We were exhausted from the battle. We under-estimated the strength of the Greek army, and how well trained they were.
Their ships were able to defeat our warships. Their soldiers especially the hoplites were very well trained. The soldiers rowing in the navy ships were a very strong force.
We had no choice but to leave and not come back.

  50. Today there was a fight between the Greeks and the Persians. I had to fight in the Battle of Marathon for the Greeks. It was so hot so I was extremely thirsty.
It was the worst day of my entire life because 195 soldiers had died including my friends. I was to be alive.
It was a bloody battle where I killed 6 people.
It took a long, long time to fight. The noise of the soldiers were so loud as they kept on screaming. . The smell was so bad I could not even breathe. When the fight was over I had to run to Athens which took me 3 hours. When I told the Athenians the good news about our victory, they were very happy.

After 2 minutes I lay down to rest….

  51. The battle of Marathon
It all began when I had run 200km from Athens to Sparta with a message asking for help, sent by the ruler of Athens. I ran for two days and two nights but when I arrived at Sparta the Spartans were celebrating a religious festival. When I told them the message they said they wouldn’t help Athens until the full moon.
Then the battle began with 1000 Athenians and 3000 Persian warriors on the other side. Although Athens only had 1000 men, we still won. After the battle was over I went back to Athens with great news of victory.

    Dear diary,
Although, the past two days were hard for me, however I did it with no trouble. There was a great Battle of Marathon and Persians were going to attack Greece. It was horrible, yet rewarding. It was a hard day for everyone especially for me. I had to run to Sparta and get help as ordered by my general. I had to run continuously for two day and nights in ordered to get help. It was really hard work yet I had to do it for my country. When I reached Sparta, I saw that they were having a religious festival and they said that they can’t help until the next full moon. I thought that this was a waste of time; moreover it was frustrating for me. However, I thought about the war and my people so, I ran back as quickly as possible. It was really tiring, but I kept on running and never stopped until I reached home. Moreover, when I reached home I saw the battle was still going on; therefore I had to take part in it also. Our commander’s clever tactics paid off and we had won the battle. We had lost only 192 men, they had lost many more. Now here I am lying down on the ground injured and taking my final breath but it feels like my life’s purpose is fulfilled.

  53. Pheidippites was a day runner at the battle of marathon. It happened when the Persian army wanted to take over Athens, pheidippites had to run all the way to Sparta to ask for their help because Sparta where the most feared fighters in ancient Greece, pheidippites ran for 2 days and 2 nights and nothing to eat or nothing to drink. But Sparta refused to help them until after the full moon because they were having a funeral about something. So pheidippites epic run was all completely for nothing and Persia was sailing closer and closer. So Athens had to stand alone against the great big Persian army. Pheidippites took place in the battle of marathon, he was a very strong man and still did not eat or drink anything from when he came running so when he arrived he had to get into position before eating or drinking. They then had to go into battle; the Greeks wore really heavy metal armor but the Persians wore really light armor but they had a very powerful army they had arch men, spear men, swords men and a lot more people so the Greeks had no chance against the Persian army. The Greeks went to battle and the Persians to but before the Persians even started moving the Persian leader took a few bunches of his men in his 600 boats and where about to sail the other side of Athens so they would attack them from both sides and Miltiades the leader of the Greeks would never know but his plan did not turn out as how he wanted it to be. Miltiades found out about his plan of attacking both sides of Athens but it would take 10 hours for all the boats to get there and several more hours to unload his men. When the Greeks and the Persians arrived to marathon they waited then the Greeks charged but the Persians still waited because the Persians knew that even before the Greeks could reach them they would be exhausted in that heavy armor but they were wrong so they started to attack, pheidippites was fighting like a madman and was killing lots and lots of Persians. But the ships where getting closer, in about 5 hours the ships would make it to land and Athens would be destroyed but the Persians could not kill lots of Greeks because the Greeks had heavy powerful armor and the Persians had only light and weaker armor. So the Greeks knew they had a good chance to win because the Greeks where getting past the Persians and circling them. When the Greeks won they got really exhausted but Miltiades forced them to go on because the ships needed at least 2 hours left to arrive Athens so they had to walk from marathon to Athens so they sent the same runner again to Athens to tell they have victory, but when pheidippites arrived and told Athens they had victory the slowly dropped down dead from hunger and drinking. When the Greeks arrived to Athens they waited until the Persian ships arrived, but when the Persian ships arrived the Persian leader was in shock to see the Greeks waiting for him so he could not go into land or they could attack his men one by one so he turned back and that is the end of the battle of marathon and the Greeks WIN!

  54. Today was the day of the Marathon battle. We Persians attacked the mainland of Greece. It all started when we sailed in 600 ships. We landed at the bay of Marathon. The Athenians were taken by surprise. Militades were used for the cunning tactics used by us in warfare. We decided it was best to challenge them bravely rather than wait for them to attack first. We decided to send Pheidippides to run to Sparta to ask for help. The Spartans were an important state within Greece and quite rightly should have helped Athens in this battle. Pheidippides ran almost continuously for two days and nights and when he reached Sparta he found that the Spartans were having a religious festival and they refused to help until the next full moon! By the time Pheidippides had run back to Marathon with the news, he had run over a hundred miles. He also had to fight in the battle. However, being a strong, well-trained Greek, he did this with no trouble.

Today my general told me I had to run to Sparta to ask them to help because the Persians were coming. I ran for 2 day and nights nonstop but when I got there the Spartans were having a religious festival and refused to help until the next full moon I had to run all the way back to tell them to tell them the bad news .I still had to take place in the war .After the war we had won and I had to run back to Athens to tell them the good news.

We came marching a long way from Athens to the place that the war was taken place, I was already sweating and was tired from walking, we wore heavy armor and carried big heavy shields on this hot DAY!!!
The Persians came on their boats with twice the number of men but we were lucky we had great weapons and protective armor, although they had twice the number of men. I felt tough and believed in myself. They came marching down; they faced us for days so did we.
FINNALLY! The war started. They started throwing arrows at us we were blessed! Only some men got killed with the arrows while we came running.
As usual I was fighting bravely! We all fought like there was no tomorrow!
After long days of fighting, the unexpected happened! The Persians ran back to their boats, we started to chase them but they already set off.

Victory!!!!!!!! Was ours. I was forced to run all the way back to Athens to report the good news.

I was very tired but at least some of us died and most of us survived. I reported the good news and felt my heart beating very fast, I felt like I was going to collapse!
